Yesterday our hostess, Sylvia, and her sisters invited Pilgrims to accompany them to their Sunday church service. I and three others went along.
As I sat listening to the message my thoughts gathered images of the Pilgrimage walking across the U.S., of the many, many, many, church services and hundreds of people gathered in them wishing us well supporting us on this journey; I also thought of the millions of Africans taken from their homelands, working, dying across the Diaspora, always the purposes of this Pilgrimage in my mind. As I sat there thinking tears filled my eyes and overflowed unceasingly for over half and hour. We had made it.
After service Sylvia introduced us to the American Ambassador to the Gambia, Alex Haley's brother. He and his wife have invited us to the Embassy on Thursday (2/11). This is Black History Month and they have something planned.
We will be in Banjul until this Friday or Saturday, or Sunday. Then back to Gorée in Senegal. For the next two weeks (til March 1) we will travel through Mali and Guinea. From March 1 to April 30 we will walk 600 miles from The Ivory Coast to Lagos Nigeria, 40 days. From Nigeria air transport to Zambia then a 2 day train ride to Johannesburg. From Johannesburg a 3week walk to Cape Town. So far I have received everyone's email up to today, 2/7.
Cash is the best care package to send, lightweight and highly transferable from country to country. there is Western Union in Banjul and Senegal. Other items include film, 35mm. Ask Elaine at EDKENSETH@aol.com for other types of mailings although it will be difficult to know where we can receive snailmail at it takes 3-4 weeks to travel.
I must go... The women's wear here is fabulous!!!!! Everyday wear looks like something from a fashion show..
I miss you and Thank You All.
Kathleen
