Letter from Gina Woods - January 29, 1999

hello,

We are now in the city of Santa Elena de Uarain. it´s a small town on the brazillian-venezuelan coast. we arrived yesterday via bus from caracas <(about 22 hours). Great roads and great views. The people are warm and friendly. we applied for and received our visas today, and today at 5 pm we will travel via bus to a place called boa vista in brazil. From there, we will take a bus or sail down the rio negro to manaus. from manaus we will sail to Belem on the coast of brazil. (about 6-10 days)

All is going well. We slept at Panayama, a small hotel the triple rooms for about $12 per night (7 thousand bolivars). Very comfortable. We´ve met many locals, mostly natives or an african native mix. (man, the African Blood runs deep). Although we wont get a chance to visit it, we were told of a town (mostly negros)called Bartloverto. Aparently they still celebrate many of the same customs of their African ancestors. Well, what we missed here, we´ll make of for in Brazil.

Aleta, the forth person who is supposed to be with us is still in puerto rico. She is planning to join us somewhere (perhaps on the Amazon). This is all for now. I am so lucky to find internet access.

much love, regina
