Great Smoky Mountains Peace Pagoda

Na Mu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo

In August 2001, Nipponzan Myohoji, a Japanese Buddhist religious order, held a Land Purification and Groundbreaking Ceremony for the construction of a shrine dedicated to World Peace in the Smoky Mountains region of East Tennessee.

Nipponzan Myohoji has built approximately 80 of these Peace Pagodas throughout the world, including two in the United States. The Great Smoky Mountains Peace Pagoda will be the third in the U.S.

The 14-acre site, purchased with donations from friends and supporters throughout the peace movement, lies in an area that the monks and nuns of Nipponzan Myohoji have walked through every year since 1999, during their annual 300-mile Peace Pilgrimage to Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Oak Ridge is a major manufacturing site for nuclear weapons and it is the original "secret city" where the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima was built. Located about one-hour's drive east of Oak Ridge, the Peace Pagoda seeks to build a community grounded in reverence and respect for life, rejecting the violence and death inherent in nuclear weapons.
